TMS delivers virtual marketing workshop for client in Sweden

May 2012 - We've recently delivered a virtual marketing strategy workshop for a Software as a Service (SaaS) client in Sweden.


TMS devised a virtual workshop to help the client validate their marketing strategy. The whole project was completed remotely, using a range of web meeting technologies, with two participants in Stockholm, one in Paris and TMS Managing Director Mark Brewerton facilitating and leading from the UK.

TMS have been working on a specific project with one of their long-standing clients to launch their service in France, Holland and Belgium. After carrying out in-house market research amongst a wide range of target customers, sufficient need for this unique service was identified to warrant further investigation.

After several months a small team has been recruited to set up the new service, which is being launched next week. "This is an exciting development for our client and for TMS," said TMS MD Mark Brewerton. "Our client provides a unique service in the UK, which we felt was ideally suited to expansion into other markets where a definite need had been identified. We're looking forward to following the success of this service and hopefully further expansion into other European countries."

We're delighted that Professor Malcolm McDonald, Emeritus Professor at Cranfield University and Honorary Professor at Warwick Business School, has agreed to speak at a second session, focussing on marketing strategy development. As a result of the project, which we undertook together with partners PFA Research, we uncovered some fascinating information. We carried out in-depth interviews with construction companies, builders and landlords through to private individuals looking to reduce their energy costs - and carbon footprint.

Whilst we were reviewing the detailed information we extracted from our very different range of respondents, we were struck by the sheer difference in interest levels in renewable energy - from completely dismissive "green sceptics" and those interested in purely the financial savings to be made, through to a number of people wholly committed to reducing their carbon footprint. 

The exercise not only provided our customer with a real insight into their market sectors - and a sound basis for the development of future strategic direction - but also was a real eye-opener for us as a business. We're currently reviewing all our energy sources and are looking into some new, more renewable options for the future.

TMS Managing Director, Mark Brewerton, has recently delivered a bespoke workshop on Marketing Strategy for the senior management team at Sysmex UK. A long-standing customer, Sysmex UK are a leading supplier of healthcare instrumentation. TMS have worked with them over a number of years, helping to develop their marketing strategy, and this workshop is a natural progression in the work we have undertaken for Sysmex.

Mark developed the workshop to specifically help the senior management team to develop a practical knowledge and understanding of the key principles of Business and Marketing Strategy development and application. "I really wanted to give the team a good range of practical "take-aways" by the end of the workshop to be able to implement across the business," says Mark. "Marketing workshops only work if the advice is practical and entirely relevant to our customer's business."

The sales strategy development project will be headed by TMS consultant Rennie Gould, who has a wealth of sales training and sales management experience. Rennie's insight is helping the club to maximise its in-house sales effectiveness to ensure the achievement of future objectives.

"We've been working with Sysmex UK for over four years now," says TMS Managing Director, Mark Brewerton. "It's the sort of long-term relationship as marketing consultants we strive to develop with our customers, where we can step in as and when we are needed to complement their existing marketing function. We have over the years gained a thorough understanding of how Sysmex work in their markets as a leading provider of in-vitro diagnostic systems and services. We've just been asked to carry out a new product development project for Sysmex. A large part of the project will include carrying out in-depth customer research to look at how customer needs are currently being serviced. It's our expertise in extracting the right information from the right people which helps us to develop sound strategy, not only for Sysmex but for all our clients.

It is this research which will then form the basis of how we then identify potential new markets for Sysmex to develop.

Technical Resources are a specialist recruitment consultancy, focussing on the IT and telecoms sectors. They have also recently set up a sister company - The Resourcing Team - to find suitable accountancy and administrative candidates for their client base in and around London and Surrey. TMS first started to work with Technical Resources five years ago, helping them to develop their overall strategic direction and implementing a range of tactical marketing initiatives, including the development of a new website and SEO campaign.

Total Marketing Solutions was appointed to help the Club achieve a more focussed approach to sales and marketing across all its business sectors. We carried out research amongst members and in-depth interviews with all the various leisure and sporting sub-committees before developing a 5 year marketing plan. We also identified the need for a dedicated Sales and Marketing Manager and provided assistance throughout the recruitment process, resulting in the successful appointment of the Club's new manager.

TMS have been working with Irvine-based 360CRM since the beginning of the year to help the company more clearly define the future direction of their business. 360CRM provide a unique, multi-media Appointment Confirmation Service - Chronos - which is designed to help NHS Trusts improve the efficiency and productivity of their outpatient clinics. As part of this wider sales and marketing strategy development process, TMS identified the need to recruit a product marketing manager to actively focus on marketing the company's fully managed service offer.
Having helped 360CRM identify the type of candidate required for the position, TMS then also helped to design and manage the recruitment process, which culminated in the successful appointment of Mike Wilson. Mike has extensive experience in marketing IT technology solutions gained in the financial self-service market and is now Head of Product Marketing for 360CRM.
"TMS provided us with invaluable assistance in designing and then successfully running the recruitment process, looking at non-traditional recruitment methods such as Linked-in to help us find the best candidate for the job," says 360CRM's Managing Director Walter Miller.

The workshop in Kuala Lumpur on 28/29 June explored the implications of customer profitability on overall marketing strategy.

A number of topics were discussed, including customer importance, the effect of customer satisfaction on customer loyalty and lifetime value and the use of CRM techniques to help deliver the total customer experience.

Most of the attendees where from the banking sector and telecoms sectors. The following organisations were represented: Citibank, Telecom Malaysia, Eon Bank and CIMB Investment Bank.

Already delegates have said they are amending their marketing strategy as a result of this important workshop. TMS are looking forward to delivering further workshops together with organisers UNI Strategic to deliver further workshops later in the year.

TMS has been working with Exeter Golf and Country Club for a number of months, helping them to develop and implement a new sales and marketing strategy. As part of this work, we identified the need for a Sales and Marketing Manager to drive the business forward.

Working together with EGCC General Manager Martine Halse, TMS developed an appropriate brief and project-managed the recruitment process. Jenni Taffs was sucessfully recruited to the role and is now responsible for the development of sales - both in membership and in conferences and banqueting - and the marketing of one of Devon's premier leisure resorts. "We identified a need for a Sales and Marketing Manager early on in our work with EGCC," says TSM Managing Director, Mark Brewerton. "We were delighted to be able to find someone of Jenni's calibre who will be able to continue and expand on the sales and marketing strategy work we have already undertaken for EGCC."

Rennie's wide experience covers a broad range of sectors - from automotive and chemicals to financial and professional services. Rennie has worked with major organisations throughout Europe, the United States, South America and the Middle East. Following a management career with the Ford Motor Company, consultancy projects undertaken to date have included Natwest, the Royal Mail and Experian.

Rennie is also a skilled facilitator and workshop leader, having led development programmes in most areas of sales and marketing. He holds and MBA from Cranfield Business School and is a member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing. He is also a Visiting Lecturer in Marketing at Cardiff Business School.

It's been a month now since our new website was dragged screaming into the world and, whilst we are smugly pleased with it, we wanted to make sure that it had achieved its main objective - to work harder for us by bringing in new, quality enquiries. So we've been feverishly monitoring its progress through google analytics - something we do for all our customers who launch a new website as part of their strategy development. So here are the stats, the proof of the pudding:

Month on month enquiries have trebled - compared with January 2009 we have received three times as many enquiries in January 2010. And what's more, these have been good quality enquiries from companies who understand the strategic nature of what we do and want to work with us.

Traffic to the website - it's up 35% compared with this time last year. By anyone's reckoning that's pretty good!

Bounce rate - in other words, a visitor who lands on a page and then leaves from the same page without looking anywhere else (because it's just not interesting enough), has gone down by 10%. So our new site is enticing more visitors to look further and find out more.

Time spent on the site and pages viewed - The average length of time spent on the site and the average number of pages viewed have both increased by 10%. Again, this is another clear indication that the site is more engaging and more accurately getting the right information to the right people.

SEO still fantastic - whilst we were a little concerned that any tweaks to the site might impact on our rather fantastic SEO rankings (just type in "Marketing consultant" to see where we are!), we're delighted that our rankings have stayed as strong as ever, if not a little higher in some instances.

And whilst we are now working with the companies who enquired via the website in January 2010 to develop them into customers, we are at this early stage more than pleased with the improved results our new website has delivered. After all, if we can't do it for ourselves, how could we possibly claim to do it for other companies?

Marketing Consultant Brian O'Donnell joins Total Marketing SolutionsThe Total Marketing Solutions team has been further strengthened by the arrival of Brian O'Donnell as a Consultant. Brian brings with him a real depth of marketing experience, with particular expertise in online marketing and customer acquisition. Brian has joined us from Suttons Consumer Products, where he was involved in marketing brands including Suttons Seeds. Educated in Ireland, Brian has an MBA from London Guildhall University.

TMS Managing Director Mark Brewerton has been appointed a Fellow to the Chartered Institute of Marketing in recognition of his expertise in marketing strategy development and marketing consultancy. Mark is already Vice Chair for the CIM in Cornwall with a remit to help the organisation become the champion of small to medium-sized businesses throughout the county.

TMS have recently started working with leading financial software developers, JHC. Based in the City of London, JHC provide software solutions for financial institutions, wealth managers and both retail and institutional stockbrokers. As strategic marketing specialists, TMS have been looking at their different markets and products and services proposition in order to assess their marketplace and the opportunities available to them. "We have been able to look at JHC's markets through in-depth, one-to-one interviews, which form the basis of our strategy development. A leading supplier of market intelligence reports to process industries, Protel Projects, based in Somerset, has chosen TMS to help reinvigorate business growth. As a first step, TMS have been carrying out comprehensive research into their customers' awareness and perceptions of the brand in order to better understand customer needs.

With this information, TMS is now exploring ways in which Protel can extend their products and services offering to greatest effect. "We place a lot of emphasis on doing our homework right at the beginning of a poject," says TMS Managing Director Mark Brewerton. "That way, we know we are heading in the right direction when it comes to strategy development. It sounds obvious, but too many companies decide on a course of action without having all the necessary information on which to base a sound judgement. This goes to the very heart of how we operate and enables us devise strategies which really work for our clients."

One of the best parts of being a marketing consultant is that we meet people with bright ideas who are prepared to carry the idea through. Some years ago, Cathy Debenham despaired and bought a condensing gas boiler because, despite days of research, she couldn't be sure whether the various biomass boilers that suppliers were trying to sell her were appropriate for her house; whether there was a stable supply of wood pellets, whether they could be delivered up her steep drive, or even whether biomass was even a sensible option. So she decided to do something about it - and built a business from scratch.

YouGen aims to build a community of people interested in renewable energy and low carbon living. This will include suppliers, people who've already revolutionised their energy use, and people who are thinking about it. The hope is that everyone will share expertise and help each other.

We've been working with Cathy over the last few months in order to help her build and implement YouGen's marketing strategy, and it's been a pleasure. Sandra Lawes has recently joined forces with Total Marketing Solutions as a Consultant, building on success achieved in a variety of senior marketing roles in a number of sectors including healthcare, IT, construction and travel. Sandra has worked in companies as varied as Fisons, Thomas Cook and BUPA.  She also has experience within a major advertising agency, working on accounts such as Bovis Homes, Twinings and public sector clients.

More recently, Sandra has focussed her energies on working with clients in the healthcare sector, carrying out market assessment and feasibility studies for various public and private healthcare providers. "Sandra brings with her an excellent understanding of strategic marketing, particularly in the healthcare sector. She is a real pleasure to work with and we're looking forward to working  on some exciting future projects together," says TMS Managing Director, Mark Brewerton.

Sandra has an MBA and holds the Chartered Institute of Marketing's Post Graduate Diploma in Marketing. She is also a Chartered Marketer.
